Sticherus flabellatus - Umbrella Fern

Sticherus flabellatus - Umbrella Fern

One of the most elegant of NZ ferns. Spreads by creeping rhizome with delicate umbrella shaped tiering fronds. Can colonise large areas in the wild making a spectacular display. We were amazed at the scene in the main photo when we visited Gt Barrier. Range restricted to northern North Island and North Western South Island. In the North Island usually associated with kauri (Agathis australis) forest, and/or regenerating forest and scrub nearby established kauri forest remnants. Abundant in gumland. Very difficult fern to cultivate. Rarely available. Collectors fern.
