Rhabdothamnus solandri - Taurepo, New Zealand gloxinia
Unique to NZ. A small slender branching shrub, with rounded, toothed leaves and distinctive bristly hairs on branches and leaves. Stunning yellow-orange-red tubular flowers appear year-round, peaking between October and February. The flowers are pollinated mainly by the long-beaked bellbird, tui and stitchbird. The short-beaked silvereye sometimes rips through the sides of the flowers to steal nectar.
An attractive plant for a semi-shaded site in free-draining, fertile (high Ca, Mg) soil.
