Ptisana salicina - King Fern, Para, Tawhiti (was Marattia salicina)

Frost tender tropical fern. Requires shade and deep rich damp soil. Very large fronds. Good pot plant. Slow growing. Rare and in serious decline. Confined to lowland forest from Kaitaia to Bay of Plenty and Taranaki usually in gullies and heavy bush. Was once common and an important food source for Maori. Now endangered by grazing and habitat decline. Feral and domestic stock, wild pig and goat browse are serious threats throughout its range.
