Pterostylis banksii - Tutukiwi, Greenhood Orchid
New Zealand’s largest greenhood ground orchid. Roots produce underground tubers resulting in colonies of numerous plants growing vegetatively. Flower is a green coloured hood with paler stripes on a tall stem which. sprouts and flowers in spring to summer and then dies down.
Common in most areas of bush in New Zealand and usually common when found. Not endangered.
Not easy to cultivate. Best planted under leafy shade or in a pot.

Pterostylis have underground bulbs and only appear above ground late November into the summer months, forming leaves and flowers. There is nothing to show above ground for the rest of the year. We will only sell them when they are showing. Hold them in the pot until the flowers die down and plant the whole pot ball in a clearly defined area so you can watch for the flowers the following year.
