Earina mucronata - bamboo orchid, peka-a-waka, spring earina
Grows as an epiphyte in trees and on rocks and logs. Numerous light green grassy leaves on unbranched, long persistent, wiry, cane-like stems up to 1 m long with orange, scented flowers in spring or early summer in Northland almost continuous flowering. For collectors.
Can be grown in a hanging basket in standard orchid mix or strapped to a tree trunk. Keep moist during the drier months. Does best in semi-shade.
NZ orchids should not be removed from the wild. We propagate these by division of stock plants originally rescued from fallen branches at our property when we lived in Oratia, Auckland.
